Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is a rare, progressive genetic neuromuscular disorder that causes muscle weakness and the gradual loss of muscle mass. It primarily affects the muscles of the face, shoulders, and upper arms, although over time it may also involve the trunk and legs. The progression of the disease varies greatly from person to person: while some experience only mild symptoms, others may develop significant mobility impairment. There is currently no cure, but ongoing research is advancing towards the development of treatments that can improve quality of life and slow the progression of the disease.
